When exposed to solvents or other chemical substances, many plastic materials will swell, soften, elute or deform. Worse,
the chemicals packaged in standard plastic bottles can slowly permeate through the packaging and escape into the environment.
EVOH LAYER offers very high resistance to hydrocarbons, oils and organic solvents, making them the material of choice for packaging agrochemicals
and pesticides. Used either in either direct or indirect contact with the chemicals, EVOH LAYER offers superior resistance against swelling and deformation.
EVOH LAYER barrier properties against organic solvent permeation are several thousand times better than those of standard polyolefins. Even compared
to other “barrier” plastics, it is possible to reduce the amount of materials used, even while improving performance.
EVOH stands for Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer and is a flexible, crystal clear, glossy thermoplastic copolymer. This material has excellent flex-crack resistance, and exhibits a high resistance to hydrocarbons, oils and organic solvents. EVOH is known for having some of the best barrier resistance to gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide which makes it particularly suited for packaging food, drugs, cosmetics, and other perishable products. When compared to other common films, EVOH is considered to have superior barrier properties. However, when exposed to moisture, EVOH loses its good gas barrier properties. For this reason, EVOH is often used in a multilayer co-extruded film structure with materials such as HDPE, PP and PET, all of which have superior moisture barrier properties. Ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) barriers comprise a family of extrudable plastic barrier materials with excellent barrier properties for oxygen and a variety of other gases and volatile products (flavor barrier). Based on its excellent gas barrier properties, EVOH barrier grades are also great for applications in food packaging and agricultural film sectors among others. EVOH copolymer also has excellent chemical and oil resistance that enables it to be used as the fuel barrier layer in low emission fuel tanks for automobiles and portable gas containers.
